Artist Comments

This is a copy of a study by John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925) which he did in preparation for his larger painting El Jaleo.

This was painted 'alla prima' which translates to 'at first' or 'at once' meaning it was painted in one sitting. This approach means there is no underpainting and the painting is constructed wet-on-wet. A limited palette was used and parts of the grey ground was allowed to show through.
