Artist Comments

This is a copy of the painting Old Willie: The Village Worthy by Glasgow artist James Guthrie (1859 - 1930). You can see the original in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow.

I love the original and make a point to go and view it whenever I visit the Kelvingrove gallery.

This was a departure from my usual drawing, underpainting and then final painting layer process to try 'alla prima', where the painting is concluded in one go. The composition was 'sketched' using oil paint and there were no layers, as such.
